Welcome, your guest’s night of luxury begins...
Your guest's night of luxury begins as they pull into the semi-circular driveway, rolling gently over a path of hand-laid cobblestone. The path is brightened by in-tree resort-style lighting that engulfs the car as it rounds the carefully manicured lawns and immaculately trimmed palms. To the left, layered stone walls form a series of terraced gardens that are teeming with both native and tropical plantlife, skirting the landscape in front of the home. Just beyond the final terrace, a low fern- and ivy-covered wall gives way to six broad columns that dominate the home's majestic facade.
Inching further up the driveway, your guest eases to a halt as the vehicle approaches the wooden bridge that spans the astonishing front entrance. Their eyes are quickly drawn to the flames flickering to their right, illuminating a fire-lit water feature emerging from the sediment and flora of the Sonoran Desert; a stream of crystal clear water dances over a bed of river rock. An arched stonework escarpment hemmed in fire shimmers above the water as the stream swirls gently into a series of small waterfalls that drop softly just in front of the bridge. The whole scene is perfectly framed between latern-topped, stacked stone accent columns, latticed by a wrought iron guardrail. As the uniformed valet approaches to take your guest's keys, they turn back to the home, stepping out of the car onto the bridge's solid beams of Old Douglas-fir.
The 2,000 pound custom iron doors of the entry gate stand open as your guest's path is lit by gas lanterns affixed to stacked stone columns on either side. Three chandeliers hang beyond the columns, illuminating the second story windows. Approaching the gate, the light, warmth and sounds of the people gathered within beckon new arrivals towards the courtyard's interior. Taking the final steps over the bridge's roughhewn Douglas-fir planks, onto the courtyard floor of finely crafted wood beams, your guest has arrived.
Inside the courtyard, the sound of gentle music emanates from all around. A waiter approaches with a tray of champagne; taking a glass, your guest takes a step backwards, taking in the fellow party-goers. A small group of acquaintances sip champagne and make small talk, oblivious to the cool air of the desert night as they gather around the gas fireplace tucked into the wall. Sheaths of water fall steadily from the base of a stacked stone column behind them, pouring into a small koi pond below.
Turning to see what's hidden behind them, your guest notices that the suspended ironwood floor of the courtyard ends just a few steps away, giving way to another of the home's seven koi ponds -- this one is dotted with lilypads, each pad an intricate circle of handset Mexican black peach pebbles. The two pads furthest from the courtyard's center are occupied by a couple who stand chatting and laughing, their attention divided between each other and the fish below. Their conversation is muted by the sound of several waterfalls, four flowing from each side of the stacked stone column and another cascading down a small embankment of rock to the right. Your guest smiles at the lilypad couple, and turns toward the home's front entrance to the party inside.
Passing through the impressively crafted entryway, a young woman approaches and offers to take your guest's coat. Handing over a ticket in its place, she disappears down the hall to the left. Your guest's eyes are automatically directed towards the entryway's commanding feature: in the center of the room, a staircase of reclaimed timber curves its way upwards, flanked on either side by craftsman-finished solid wood doors. Beyond the door is a room lined in wine racks, thousands of bottles lining the lower third of the room. Above the bottles, the wine room is wrapped in pristine glass, allowing a clear view of the sommelier and the small group that has gathered to sample the racks' treasures. Having nearly finished the glass of champagne from the courtyard, your guest starts toward the wine room's right doorway.
But before your guest can reach the wine room, you intercept. Greeting your newest arrival, you explain that there will be time for wine later: first, a tour of the house.
Starting nearby, you head down the hall to the right of the entryway, opposite the coat check. Pointing out the Versailles style travertine floors, you turn into your office, showing off the room's stacked stone fireplace and timber mantle, both perfectly matched to the solid beams of the coffered ceiling. As the sounds of the waterfall emanating from the courtyard draw your guest's attention, you glance out the window and realize that several more guests have just arrived -- you'll have to make the tour brief.
Sneaking past the new arrivals, you whisk by the entryway to the opposite hall. On your left, the hallway's windows open to cool air of the courtyard, and to the right, carefully selected works of art line the wall, each piece resting in an individually lit niche. Pausing at the smart room, you point out the simplicity of the home's sound and security controls. Peeking into the oversized mud room that tonight is full of guests' coats, you gesture towards the door to the garage beyond.
Noticing that the newly arrived group has moved on to the wine room, you and your guest double back past the staircase and into the kitchen. Your guest is impressed with the attention to detail: the built-in fridge, the four by ten island of cherry butcher block, the breakfast bar and granite counters, the custom crafted cherry wood cabinetry and self-closing drawers. Your guest briefly glances up at the flatscreen mounted on the kitchen wall, one of many installed in prewired locations throughout the home.
Looking out towards the dining room, you smile at the guests gathered at the dinner table. The scene in the dining room is both festive and content as your guests enjoy resort-style dining and open air living the home affords. They talk and laugh as they look out on the brightly lit backyard and pool, the fairways and mountains beyond the property growing darker in the desert night.
Moving deeper into the home's west wing, you lead your guest to the workout room, explaining that you had originally envisioned the large glass-fronted space as a conference room or sauna (since it is wired on a stand alone system to serve as either), but decided it would get more use as a home gym. You walk over the gym's bamboo floors, past the cardio and resistance equipment and on towards the room's back corner. Opening a door, you and your guest step out into a private Zen courtyard. You spend a moment chatting and admiring the gardener's handiwork, the small but immaculately groomed gardens surround a lava rock waterfall.
Back inside, you open the sliding barn-style door to the presentation room. Earlier in the day, you used the room to screen the first spots for your company's new advertising campaign, some thirty five board members and employees comfortably taking it all in. Now, though, the 108" screen stares blankly at empty cushioned seating and the room's cooling system has been turned off. Short on time, you close the blackout doors and lead your guest towards the backyard.
You begin a whirlwind tour of the property's backyard. You point out the workmanship of the stone fireplace and solid wood seating that surround the hot tub and the outdoor shower built into the home's stone wall. Moving on, members of the catering staff work around the outdoor kitchen, grilling skewered hors d'oeuvres and pulling items from the fridge as they prepare trays on the granite countertops. Several guests gather around the adjacent fireplace. As you exchange greetings with the party-goers seated on the granite and wood paneled benches that extend from the kitchen island, your guest takes in the pool from behind the diving rock. A fire-lit waterfall drops 10 feet from the roof of the cabana, a dancing rainbow disappearing into shimmering cerulean water below.
Passing the waterfall and the stacked stone pillar fireplace behind it, you take your guest up the flagstone stairs to the cabana. Several guests are congregating in relative seclusion under the wheelspoke ,beams of the cabana roof, most are seated on the stone and wood backed benches. The group enjoys the warmth of the cabana's fireplace as the in-tree lighting of the palms surrounding their oasis stave off the deep blue night sky. Just past the cabana, the light ends at the property's edge. Stepping out towards the home's private tee box on the (hole #)th hole of Camelback Golf Club, a cool breeze whisks away the warm air that has followed you from the cabana. Beyond the course sits Mummy Mountain and the surrounding hills, their now black peaks just visible in the moonlight. Before heading back inside, you invite your guest to return later in the week to enjoy your backyard resort while the sun is still up.
Slipping into the great room from the back entrance, you stop at the wet bar. The bartender is busy replacing the keg, so you slip behind him to grab a bottle of pinot grigio from the refrigerator. Retrieving two glasses from the the mastercrafted shelves, you place them on the reclaimed wood countertop. As you pull the cork a bit of wine spills over the side of the bar, so after handing your guest their glass, you wet a hand towel in the sink to wipe the stacked stone.
You take your glasses with you as step beside the stacked stone bar, opening the hidden door to the caretaker's suite. Your guest is surprised at the spaciousness of the suite's greatroom, it's size enhanced by the nine foot ceilings and the light of the perfectly positioned recessed lighting. En route to the bedroom, a quick tour of the suite reveals the full bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room.
The bedroom itself is as impressively proportioned as the rest of the suite. The spaces between the king sized furniture set are flanked by tall, perfectly set windows open to the night air. The delicate work of master craftsmen is evident throughout the room, particularly within the walk-in closet with custom knotty alder cabinetry and shelves.
After a quick peek outside at the caretaker's private courtyard and outdoor fireplace, you head back towards the party.
Arriving in the living room, your guest stops to greet another party-goer. You take a sip of pinot and glance up, trying to remember the name of the movie playing on the flatscreen above the fireplace. When your guest turns back towards you, you quickly point out the fireplace's reclaimed Old Douglas-fir mantle and the custom beam accents on the ceiling above before moving on towards the second floor.
You wind up the stairs, the open ceiling wrapped in the glass walls of the wine room. The massive aged wood posts and beams of the first floor and the stacked stone provide natural insulation, keeping the home's open air temperate from midwinter through the Arizona summers. Halfway up, your guest stops to make a remark about the beauty of the entryway's crystal chandelier. Nearing the top, you both glance over the wrought iron railing for a bird's eye view of the wine room below.
Reaching the upstairs sitting room, you see several members of your company's board seated in quiet conversation. You nod as you move past them towards the junior suites that occupy the second floor's east wing. At the front suite you walk past the queen bed to the small patio, peering over the wrought iron rail to see if there are any late arrivals in the front drive.
Moving back across the open sitting room, you open the french doors to the master suite. The room's impressive size seems to dwarf the four post bed that sits in its center, embracing the warm hard wood floors that lead to the raised fireplace and hand scraped mantel -- a paradise designed for long, relaxing mornings in bed. To the right are the his and hers closets, one home to its own washer and dryer, the other featuring a tall picture window. Turning back from the closets into the bedroom, you point out the wall mounted flatscreen that sits above the gas fireplace, quickly making your way to the bathroom suite.
Reaching the bathroom suite, you show your guest the glass-walled water room, pointing out the ceiling mounted shower head, wall mounted wand and all-over body sprays. To complete the picture you turn on the room's steam feature, the water rooms glass doors gently fogging for a moment before you turn it off. Rounding the peninsular granite countertop and its double bowl sinks and private powder area, you turn on the bath's ceiling spout. Your guest contemplates a quiet evening at home for a moment before you remind them that it's time to return to the party.
On your way back out you stop to take your guest out to the oversized patio, taking one last look at the unobstructed view, the sounds coming from the brightly lit backyard in stark contrast with the silence of the darkened fairways and the deep blue mountains beyond.
Leading your guest back downstairs, you deposit them in the wine room to begin their night out. Taking a seat at the wine room bar, your guest turns to look at the dining room beyond the glass behind them. The sommelier pours a glass of white as your guest relaxes in the cool light of the wine room, the party continuing all around them.
